What to prepare before buying a car in New Jersey

A practical appointment checklist: identification, insurance, trade information and questions to ask before your visit.

Eduardo Antonievicz · 3 minute read

The right checklist depends on where you live, whether you have a trade and how you plan to pay. Contact me before your visit so we can confirm what applies to your transaction.

Key points

  • Confirm the checklist before visiting.
  • Keep sensitive documents off ordinary website forms.
  • Ask about registration and delivery arrangements.

Identification and insurance

For registration, NJ MVC lists identification and New Jersey insurance information among the required items. Ask which documents fit your circumstances. When you buy a new vehicle from a New Jersey dealer, the dealer generally handles the title and registration application.

If you have a trade

Have the current mileage, registration, available keys and lender information ready for the appointment. Ask how to obtain a payoff quote and what is needed if someone else is on the title.

Financing and delivery questions

Ask the dealership what its approved finance process requires and how to provide documents securely. Our website contact form is for arranging help; it does not accept Social Security numbers, bank information or license images. Confirm payment arrangements, insurance timing and delivery details directly with Eduardo.
